In my own words...

The work done by the Smile Foundation is close to me – as a baby one of my sons was a patient at the Johannesburg General Hospital’s Craniofacial Clinic, and although he didn’t need surgery, as a family we were exposed to the fear of the unknown and the implications of facial disfigurement in children.

The run starts in the South of Germany, each day running over mountain after mountain, through Austria and Switzerland, ending in a village in the North of Italy. The total ascent will be 14 000m (that’s 14km!) and I know I will have a big smile on my face at the top of each mountain – something to share with each new smile that emerges from the SMILE WEEK operating theaters!

panic (almost) sets in

No, not panic about the race, but panic about what to race in! All my running kit is in my luggage which is languishing somewhere between Jhb, Dubai and Munich. Airline rather casual about the whole thing and am having to think of plans b, c and d very quickly. Luckily am staying with friends in Munich and will borrow a few t shirts, waterproof jacket (more rain in the Alps), rucksack and sleeping bag. But need to find sports shop soon, thank goodness for credit cards.

Will meet Karen at the station this afternoon and then next blog (happier hopefully) from Oberstdorf.

And thanks so much for all the good wishes sms-es from all of you, wonderful to get! Brilliant news about the money for Smile Foundation pouring in.
