In my own words...

The work done by the Smile Foundation is close to me – as a baby one of my sons was a patient at the Johannesburg General Hospital’s Craniofacial Clinic, and although he didn’t need surgery, as a family we were exposed to the fear of the unknown and the implications of facial disfigurement in children.

The run starts in the South of Germany, each day running over mountain after mountain, through Austria and Switzerland, ending in a village in the North of Italy. The total ascent will be 14 000m (that’s 14km!) and I know I will have a big smile on my face at the top of each mountain – something to share with each new smile that emerges from the SMILE WEEK operating theaters!

panic (almost) sets in

No, not panic about the race, but panic about what to race in! All my running kit is in my luggage which is languishing somewhere between Jhb, Dubai and Munich. Airline rather casual about the whole thing and am having to think of plans b, c and d very quickly. Luckily am staying with friends in Munich and will borrow a few t shirts, waterproof jacket (more rain in the Alps), rucksack and sleeping bag. But need to find sports shop soon, thank goodness for credit cards.

Will meet Karen at the station this afternoon and then next blog (happier hopefully) from Oberstdorf.

And thanks so much for all the good wishes sms-es from all of you, wonderful to get! Brilliant news about the money for Smile Foundation pouring in.

Fame At Last

So as the two adventurers head for the Alps news start to break across South Africa. I went to collect my bike from Bedfordview Cycle's today and Shane was sticking a laminated news cutting about our two intrepid explorers that he had found in the Edenvale News.

Sure enough when I got home I came across an article in the Citizen Newspaper about our ladies. (You can read it HERE) So the money is coming in and we have over R15 000 pledged already and we really could use your help. If you have already donated THANK YOU, if not please do by clicking HERE and please tell everyone you know to visit www.ttmad.com

Looking forward to news from the race!

Regards to all

Dora the Explorer and all that....

I learned this evening that a little girl in our neighbourhood will be a part of this current Smile Week - has facial and hand burns that require surgery, so thank you to all those who have already donated funds to this cause (about R14 000 pledged so far) and made this op possible. Petunia is her pretty name! She has said she is nervous of the recovery phase, well I can tell you that Karen and I have had the odd flutter this week, sweaty palms from nervousness or excitement, we're not sure!

The training has been done, kit all sorted and now the final countdown begins. We've had some grand send-offs - a great article in the local paper, a healthy breakfast party after Saturday's training run and the Doras are almost ready to find their way to the start line in Oberstdorf, appropriately kitted out of course, some artistic dames in our club....
